Historic Center of Lviv

The exact date of Lviv’s founding is not known for certain. There are suggestions that the city was created before the 6th century, as evidenced by numerous archaeological excavations and finds. However, the official founding date — 1256 — is the year the Galician-Volhynian Chronicle, which mentions Lviv, was published. At that time, the city was divided into three parts: High Castle (the detinets), Lower Castle (the king’s residence), and the fortified suburb.

Історичний центр Львова

Over the years of its existence, Lviv has never changed its name. The ancient city was named after one of the Ukrainian princes — Lev Danylovych (the son of the city’s founder — Danylo Halytskyi).

Modern Lviv is very different from the small town described in historical sources. On the site of Svobody Avenue, where the Opera House now stands, the Poltva River flowed centuries ago. However, the authorities of the time decided to remove the river because of its unsanitary impact on the city. It caused a lot of dirt, insects bred there, the risk of malaria increased, and a stench was constantly felt in the air.

Ancient Lviv — a tourist pearl of Ukraine

Incredibly, the largest concentration of architectural landmarks is not in the largest city of Ukraine, Kyiv, but in Lviv itself. Yes, this cozy city has become the record holder for the number of architectural landmarks. Their distinctive feature is how close they are to one another. So a walk through the city will be informative and convenient, since all the most important architectural landmarks of Lviv are within walking distance. Here you will not have to waste extra time to see the main Lviv churches, parks, or museums.

The historic center of Lviv includes many interesting architectural landmarks, among them: Rynok Square, surrounded by landmark buildings known for their architectural features and legends; the square’s central building — the Town Hall; the Dominican church; the Royal Arsenal; the City Arsenal; the Powder Tower; the Opera House; Ivan Franko National University; the Black House; the Korniakt Palace; the Armenian Church; St. Paraskeva Friday Church; the Railway Station, and others.

The uniqueness of Lviv’s architectural landmarks lies in their good condition, maintained through constant reconstruction. Surprisingly, almost all of Lviv’s buildings were not destroyed after the devastating Second World War, so every tourist can appreciate the true beauty and the vision of the architects and sculptors who worked on the city’s historical monuments. If we speak about Lviv’s architecture, it can be described in one word — diversity. Each architectural landmark is unique in its architectural style, which reflects the features of a particular historical era and the influence of neighboring countries’ cultures.

Unfortunately, few architectural landmarks in the Gothic style, dating to the early 16th century, have remained in Lviv. However, here you will see many buildings in the Baroque style (the Jesuit church, the Korniakt Palace, the Jabłonowski Palace), Renaissance style (the Mykolaievychivska Tenement House, the Venetian Tenement House), Classicism (the Piarists’ Collegium, the Trinitarian Church of the Holy Trinity), Art Deco (the building on Rossi Street), and Modernism (the former Grüner income house, the house of engineer Jan Stromenger).

Lviv is interesting not only for its architectural landmarks, but also for its various museums. They captivate tourists with their legends and rare exhibits, fascinate them with mysterious stories from the past, and share interesting facts that are not known to the wider public.
