What to See in Chernivtsi?

Chernivtsi is a city of surprises. It is not only beautiful and welcoming to its guests, but also truly able to surprise visitors with interesting historical facts and impressive architectural landmarks. So, when planning a holiday, be sure to add to your wish list the city that has something to see — Chernivtsi.

Bukovynska Hospital is more than just an institution where people have been treated and lives saved for more than a hundred years; it is also a historical landmark of the city. Once, the famous writer Mykhailo Bulgakov worked in this building. He was not only a talented writer, but also a good doctor with a medical education. There are few facts left in the city about Bulgakov’s life, but it is known for certain that in 1916 he lived in the city and worked as a doctor.

The lavish synagogue building, designed in the Neo-Moorish style, was a true adornment of the city from 1870 to 1941. However, the devastating war years did not spare the building, which was almost completely destroyed by fire. After restoration in 1959, the temple was rebuilt and turned into the Zhovten cinema (now called Chernivtsi). The new building no longer had the large dome; a fourth floor and a gabled roof with a pediment were added.

The Puppet Theatre is a unique building erected from stones that were used to build the old fortress on Mount Tsecyno. It is also one of the oldest buildings in the city, which in 1782 received the name “the colonel's house”. A fire in 1866 almost completely destroyed the building, but it was restored in 1904, giving it the modern appearance that participants can appreciate. Until 1983, the building was a military casino, an officers' club and an educational facility. Only in the early 90s of the XX century did it become a puppet theatre, which still presents lavish performances for children and their parents.

If you happen to visit the old part of the city, you can look at the small estate from 1900 on Olzhycha Street, where a girl named Mila was born. She is now a Hollywood actress known worldwide — Mila Kunis. In childhood, her parents emigrated to the USA, and the girl began her acting career there. And although the actress has a negative attitude toward her homeland, she still has Ukrainian roots. The house now belongs to a deputy of the State Duma of Russia.

One of the most beautiful universities in Ukraine is Chernivtsi National University. This is an exceptionally beautiful and lavish building, which at one time was the residence of the metropolitans of Bukovyna and Dalmatia. 2 mln. zlotys were allocated for its construction, and the construction itself lasted 20 years. Within the walls of this institution, I. Franko completed his studies in 1890-1891. And today thousands of tourists receive higher education. Almost everything in Chernivtsi University has remained unchanged. So it is certainly worth seeing in Chernivtsi not only the university itself, but also its rich and lavish interiors of the main halls. It is not for nothing that people in the city believe that anyone who has not been to Chernivtsi University will not be able to fully imagine what Chernivtsi are like.

Chernivtsi is a city in which the 19th-century buildings, built in the Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance styles, have been well preserved. Therefore, anyone wishing to see its historic part should head to the central part of the city. Among the many interesting buildings of Central Square, the city hall deserves special attention. And on the most beautiful Theatre Square of Chernivtsi, be sure to find time to visit the Drama Theatre. Here you can not only see a good performance, but also appreciate the beauty of the building, executed in the style of Vienna modernism.
