Weekend itinerary in summer: amazing Uman

Uman is a small city in Cherkasy region that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. It is one of the romantic and mysterious cities that became known thanks to an incredible love story.

Uman is located 277 km from Odesa, 190 km from Cherkasy, 200 km from Kyiv and 300 km from Khmelnytskyi. Uman is striking with its beauty in any season. However, the tourist season starts only in spring and lasts until the end of November.

The enchanting Sofiivka

To get to know Uman, it is worth starting with its pride and calling card — the flowering Sofiivka Park. Every year, thousands of tourists come here to enjoy the park’s beauty, its shady alleys, refreshing waterfalls, picturesque lakes and flowering glades. In May, Sofiivka is immersed in the flowers of magnolias, lilacs, irises and tulips. In June and July, their bright bloom gives way to the delicate fragrance of more than 150 varieties of roses, and in autumn the park burns with brightly colored leaves.

Basilian Monastery

The mysterious underground of the Basilian Monastery impresses with its size. High ceilings, wide passages, spacious rooms — they impress with their scale and dispel the idea of the narrow corridors typical of most underground sites. However, that is not the only interesting thing about this monastery. Its history is full of events and impresses with the way such a building looked on for hundreds of years at the most important historical events in Ukraine. The Basilian Monastery has experienced years of flourishing and neglect, yet it can still tell modern visitors much about the most important historical figures of Uman.

St Nicholas Cathedral

St Nicholas Cathedral is a reminder for the people of Uman of the important victory over Napoleon’s army. The townspeople were able to build the shrine with their own funds to thank God for saving the people from the great invader. The site for construction was not chosen by chance. There was once a defensive fortress there, and later a church stood there.

At first, the temple was built as a church. Only later did it receive cathedral status and become the main shrine of Uman. A school was opened at the church, where children and adults could learn to read and write and study God’s word.

Dormition Church

Dormition Church is a temple with a complex history. Its construction lasted almost 100 years, but the church’s period of flourishing was short-lived. Almost 30 years after it opened, the persecution of its clergy began. During the Soviet period, the building was turned into a museum, which is still housed within its walls today. However, since 1995, part of the building has continued its religious activity. Services are held here several times a week.

Uman’s hospitable streets have many important historical buildings. That is why it is especially interesting to walk around the city in summer weather, when there is enough time to get acquainted with the city and its history. A vivid final moment of a summer weekend route will be a walk through Nova Sofiivka or watching the spectacular music and light show performed by the “Perlyna Kokhannia” fountains. The dance of bright streams of water will leave only good memories of amazing Uman for a long time.
