Getting Ready for a Trip: What to Include in a Traveler's First-Aid Kit

When travelling, it is important to have a first-aid kit close at hand so you are ready for possible unexpected situations. No matter the type of trip — whether it is a hike in the mountains, a beach holiday, or a trip to the neighboring city — some medical supplies and medicines are always useful while you are on the move. Let’s find out exactly what should be in a traveller’s first-aid kit.

Basic supplies and medicines

If you are setting off on a trip, pack not only the necessary things, such as clothes and electronics, but also medicines. No, this is not programming trouble. It is simple care for your health in case of unexpected situations. First of all, put the following medicines and supplies in the first-aid kit:

  • Dressings. Adhesive plasters, bandages, cotton wool and sterile wipes will help with first aid for cuts, scrapes or other injuries.
  • Antiseptic. A solution of iodine or chlorhexidine will help clean a wound of bacteria and prevent inflammation.
  • Painkillers. Common and effective painkiller tablets, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, can relieve pain in the case of a headache, muscle pain or other unpleasant symptoms. Such painkillers can also help with menstrual pain in women or with sudden toothache.
  • Gastrointestinal remedies. Probiotics, intestinal antiseptics and medicines for diarrhoea or constipation will be useful in the event of a harmful effect on the digestive tract. This is especially true for trips to other countries, where you plan to sample exotic or simply local cuisine or street food.
  • Antihistamines. Medicines for treating allergic reactions may be needed in the event of contact with allergens during a trip. You may not even know that you are allergic to some tropical fruit or a flower just picked.
  • Remedies for bites and insect bites. Ointments or sprays with an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect will help in treating insect bites and other similar skin injuries. It is especially worth taking these with you if you are heading to warm countries.

Additional supplies and medicines

Optionally, it is also worth having the following items in your first-aid kit:

  • Sunscreen. A cream, milk or spray with a high SPF level will help avoid burns and other skin damage from ultraviolet rays.
  • Mosquito and tick repellent. A product with DEET or another active ingredient will provide protection against insect bites and possible transmission of infections.
  • Medicines for the symptomatic treatment of colds. Medicines for sore throat, runny nose, cough and other ailments will help you recover quickly and continue your trip.

Your own traveller’s first-aid kit is an important part of any trip. It will give you peace of mind and confidence in the event of unexpected situations. Remember that it is also important to know how to use these medical supplies correctly, so make sure you have sufficient knowledge and skills in first aid (and also take the medicine packaging and instructions with you). Take care of yourself and enjoy your travels!
