Reasons to Replace a Car Engine Mount

Comfort and safety when traveling

A sign that an internal combustion engine (ICE) mount is in good working order is the complete absence of vibration in the car’s cabin, when the engine can be confirmed to be running only by sound. The service life of a mount is determined by the vehicle’s operating conditions; usually this figure ranges from 5 to 7 years. Not only comfort but also safety will be ensured by timely replacement of the engine mount.

Depending on the design features of the vehicle, ICEs are fitted with two, three or four mounts. Their main parts are:

• a metal base;
• damping parts;
• reinforcing elements.

The combination of these components allows the mount to absorb most of the vibrations and noise caused by the engine’s operation. At the same time, traveling through the regions of Ukraine becomes a comfortable journey without unexpected car repair costs.

Rubber-metal and hydraulic types

Mounts differ in design and the materials used for their components. The main types of suspension systems used to secure engines in most vehicles are:

• rubber-metal;
• hydraulic.

A unit of the first group usually consists of a pair of steel or aluminum plates and an insert made of wear-resistant rubber. To improve damping efficiency, the structure of these models is often supplemented with springs and buffer blocks.

Advantages of rubber-metal models: relatively low cost, no maintenance required. Disadvantages: increased wear under the influence of high temperatures. Application features: city cars.

The mount of the second group consists of a rubber shell with two reservoirs separated by a membrane and filled with hydraulic fluid. In this case, the chambers work through throttle openings as communicating vessels.

Advantages of hydraulic models: higher efficiency and durability. Disadvantages: they periodically require the addition of working fluid, relatively expensive. Application features: city cars, SUVs, sports cars, premium class.

Signs of a faulty mount that should not be ignored

Even a driver with limited experience can tell when it is time to take the car to a service station to replace the engine mounts. Delaying repairs will lead to accelerated wear and failure not only of the engine, but also of the transmission, suspension, and exhaust system components.

Clear symptoms that the ICE mount has reached the end of its service life:

• an unusually high level of body vibration while the engine is idling or during acceleration;
• grinding and knocking under the hood when shifting gears and braking;
• difficulty using the gearbox.

Damage to damping systems is most often caused by the destruction of the damping parts or the metal base. Premature exhaustion of the service life of the mounts can occur as a result of fitting tires with too low a profile or very stiff shock absorbers.

You can extend the life of the mount by keeping the engine clean. Fuel and lubricants getting onto the rubber parts of the mount reduce its ability to absorb vibrations.

And most importantly: when traveling, you should avoid rough roads whenever possible and give up aggressive driving.
